I was casually striking up conversation with some other soldiers and a reporter out on the covered porch of our headquarters house. I brought up the fact that we had not had a mortar attack in a day or so. Just as I started my next sentence the scream of an incoming rocket propelled grenade rang out, ending with a large explosion that scattered dust and debris throughout the courtyard. Everyone scrambled for cover just as a second rocket was screaming towards us. I was the last to clear the kitchen doorway just as the grenade exploded through the wall at the base of my chair. That explosion sent shrapnel and glass from the kitchen window flying everywhere. I didn't realize it at that moment but I was hit with a small piece of shrapnel from the blast. After a 2 hour firefight we were able to asses the damage. The area that we were sitting in was a mine field of shattered glass, shrapnel, and debris. The grenade exploded in the very seat that I was sitting in, and every occupied seat on the porch was riddled with shrapnel. On my lap just before the attack was the book, Success Through A Positive Mental Attitude and there it was amongst the debris blown in half right at the beginning of chapter two, Five Mental Bombshells For Attacking Success. The book had actually told the story of what had just happened. This was definitely my lucky day and this has been my lucky book. Still riddle with shrapnel and separated in two at chapter two. I am now passing it on in hopes that I can get enough money to start a fresh life with my family in the civilian world.
