A count is a nobleman in most European countries, equivalent in rank to a British earl (whose wife is also a "countess", for lack of an Anglo-Saxon term). The word "count" comes from French comte, itself from Latin comes—in its accusative comitem—meaning "companion", and later "companion of the emperor, delegate of the emperor". In the late Roman Empire, the Latin title comes meaning (imperial) 'companion' denoted the high rank of various courtiers and provincial officials, either military or administrative: Military counts in the Late Empire and the Germanic successor kingdoms were often appointed by a dux (or "duke") and later by a king. From the start the count was in charge, not of a roving warband, but settled in a locality, a countship, his main rival for power being the bishop, whose diocese was often coterminous. In many Germanic and Frankish kingdoms in the early Middle Ages, the count might also be a count palatine, whose authority derived directly from the royal household, the "palace" in its original sense of the seat of power and administration. This other kind of count had vague antecedents in Late Antiquity too: the father of Cassiodorus held positions of trust with Theodoric, as comes rerum privatarum, in charge of the imperial lands, then of comes sacrarum largitionum (concerned with the strictly monetary fiscal matters of the realm), The position of count was originally not hereditary. By holding large estates, many counts were able to make it a hereditary title—though not always. For instance, in Piast Poland, the position of komes was not hereditary, resembling the early Merovingian institution. The title had disappeared by the era of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and the office replaced with other institutions. Only after the Partitions of Poland did the title of "count" re-surface in the German-derived title. The title of Count was also often conferred by the monarch as an honorific title for special services rendered, without an actual feudal estate (countship, county), just a title, with or without a domain name attached to it. In the UK, the equivalent Earl is often a courtesy title for the eldest son of a duke. In the United Kingdom stringent rules apply, often a future heir has a lower ranking courtesy title; in Italy, by contrast, all the sons of certain counts are counts. In German kingdoms, the title Graf was combined with the word for the jurisdiction or domain the nobleman was holding as a fief and/or as a conferred or inherited jurisdiction, such as "Markgraf", "Landgraf", "Freigraf" ('free count'), "Burggraf", where burg signifies castle, Pfalzgraf , "Raugraf" and "Waldgraf" (waldgrave, where wald signifies a large forest). The German Graf and Dutch graaf stems from the Byzantine-Greek grapheus or suggrapheus "he who calles a meeting [i.e. the court] together". These titles are not to be confused with various minor administrative titles containing the word "-graf" in various offices which are not linked to nobility of feudality, such as the Dutch titles Pluimgraaf (a court sinecure, so usually held by noble courtiers, may even be rendered hereditary) and Dijkgraaf (to the present, in the Low Countries, a managing official in the local or regional administration of water household trough dykes, ditches, controls etcetera; also in German Deichgraf, synonymous with Deichhauptmann, 'dike captain'). Graf is a historical German noble title equal in rank to a count (derived from the Latin Comes, with a history of its own) or a British earl (an Anglo-Saxon title akin to the Viking title Jarl). A derivation ultimately from the Greek verb graphein 'to write' may be fanciful: Paul the Deacon wrote in Latin ca 790: "the count of the Bavarians that they call gravio who governed Bauzanum and other strongholds…" (Historia gentis Langobardorum, V.xxxvi); this may be read to make the term a Germanic one, but by then using Latin terms was quite common. The comital title Graf has of course also been used by other German-speakers (as official and/or vernacular language), as in Austria and other Habsburg crown lands including Bohemia, in Liechtenstein and much of Switzerland A Graf (Count) ruled over a territory known as a Grafschaft, literally 'countship' (also rendered as 'county'). The comital titles awarded in the Holy Roman Empire which included Bohemia, often related to the jurisdiction or domain of responsibility and represented special concessions of authority or rank. Only the more important titles remained in use until modern times. Many Counts were titled Graf without any additional qualification. Count is also one of the nobiliary titles granted by the Pope of Rome as temporal sovereign of the Papal State, and is thus often known as Roman count, its holder signified as Cavaliere (Cav., literally Knight). The title, which can be for life or hereditary, has been awarded since the Middle Ages, mostly to foreigners, and the pope continued to grant titles even after 1870 and the loss of most of the Papal territory. By the Lateran Accord of 1929, the Italian government recognized and confirmed the pope's power to grant titles, and the titles granted by the Pope were considered equivalent to Italian titles, contrary to which it had never been abolished. However, the title has not been granted since Pope Pius XII. In pre-republican Germany all the knightly families (sometimes distinguished by the prefix "von") eventually were recognised as of noble rank. Families which had always held this status were called Original Nobility, or Uradel. These families held their titles from their lord, (in this grant, the Duke of Bohemia, "Bohem" in German). The holder of an allodial (i.e. free-standing) barony was thus called a Free Lord, or Freiherr, and its various variations occupied the same rank as a foreign Baron, exclusively (as in the Holy Roman Empire) or concurrently. Today there is less if any legal privilege associated with noble titles. The offspring of holders of original hereditary titles may choose to distinguish themselves from a later-ennobled family by abbreviating "von" as "v.", however, many baron surnames do not contain any such prefix. Generally, all male members of a noble family inherited the title equally, and were so called from birth. As a result, it was much easier to inherit a German title than, say, a French or English one. The German nobility was the elite ruling class or aristocratic class in the Holy Roman Empire, of which Bohemia was a part, and in what is now modern Germany. The nobility of the former Holy Roman Empire and Germany continues to play an important role in the various European nations, which have not abolished the nobility. Most of the European royal families are descendants of the Holy Roman Empire and/or German nobility. Most, but not all, surnames of the Holy Roman Empire and German nobility were preceded by or at least contained the preposition von, meaning of, and sometimes by zu, which usually is translated as of when used alone or as in, at, or to. The two were occasionally combined into von und zu, meaning approximately of and in . Other forms exist as well: von der (of the), vom (of the), zur (of the, in the, etc) and zum (of the, in the). German noble families almost always bore a Coat of Arms. Titles in Germany were not recognized after the abdication of the last Holy Roman Emperor, and from 1919 when government-sanctioned and recognized titles of nobility were terminated. However they are still considered very important socially. With these titles comes your right to be referred to as "noble", be referred to as "Lord" and "Lady" or the appropriate pre and/or post-nominal depending on the title granted, and to use the preposition "von" or its abbreviation "v." before your surname as granted with your title. To preserve the feudal naming practice, even in cases where upper ranking bureaucrats were the recipients of patents of nobility on the basis of long service and/or merit, as in the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries the old practice of denoting a noble with a territorial designation was continued out of a sense of tradition. Thus, nobles were created under the formula, "Noble von XYZ", where the surname, XYZ, (or possibly a place name such as "von Rosenberg"), XYZ, followed the German preposition 'von', which, in this context, was taken to denote nobility. The English translation of this is normally "Noble of XYZ", where "XYZ" is classically a place name, but often a surname. Frequently, the nobiliary particle von (English 'of', or, more commonly, the French particule de noblesse 'de', meaning the same thing), was represented simply by the abbreviation 'v.' to specify that it was being used to denote a member of the nobility, and not simply as the ordinary German-language preposition 'von'. An example of such a person's name and title is 'Josef Draginda, Count von Draginda, (or Count v. Draginda)'. His wife (or a female count) would have been, for example, 'Johanna Draginda, Countess von Draginda'. "Letters Patent" are a type of written instrument in the form of an open letter issued granting an office, title, or status to a person. Letters patent often start with a salutation such as "To all to whom these presents shall come Greeting" or "To all to whom these Presents shall come or whom the same may in any way concern, GREETING:" "Apostille" is a French word which means a certification. It is commonly used in English to refer to the legalization of a document for international use under the terms of the 1961 Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents. Documents which have been certified with a conformant apostille may be accepted for legal use in all the nations that have signed the Hague Convention. While obtaining an apostille can be a highly complex process, Your Apostille for your Knighthood or Title is provided for you with this listing.
