Attached on a long cord is a polished Reindeer horn die for casting on the drum, which can have a symbol or be plain. Totally made of natural materials - hand treated and naturally coloured Reindeer leather with an arctic Pine wood frame. There is a loop of cord to the back of the drum, so it can be hung on the wall for display and safety. Click here to see previously made drums (Opens in another window) NOITARUMPU HISTORYThe Witch's drum has been ceremonially used as a tool for the northern people since before records began. It is deeply engrained in the heritage of the Saami folk. The Shaman would call for the help of the great spirits by beating on the drum with the reindeer bone hammer until they fell in a trance. During trance, the Shaman wandered the Underworld, where the dead provided advice for solving a problem. Dependant upon the drum skin design it illustrates all manner of earth-bound life, the underworld, the life underground etc. Using the symbols on the drum skin, the Shamans were able to make predictions. Each symbol on the drum has its own special meaning. Before drumming, the Shaman would place a die on the drum skin that was either a small piece of reindeer bone or a brass ring. When drumming, the die bounced across the skin of the drum. Using these symbols, the Shaman could predict the future. Spirit also gave help with healing sicknesses. A Shaman is a healer. The word Shaman originates from the Siberian Evenki Tribe word "Saman", that means knowledge and vision. Shamanism is a traditional and ancient way of taking care of natural spiritual and physical welfare. A person aspiring to become a Shaman has to be prepared for self-sacrifice and to help people unselfishly. The Shaman's aid is the drum. Healing involves rituals comprising chanting and the use of various natural powers provided by objects such as stones and feathers. HOW THESE DRUMS ARE MADE The drum is made from wood and Reindeer skin. The fur is removed from the Reindeer skin and the leather is stretched to dry in large sheets. It's colour is made from boiling up different plants and tree barks or other colourants and consequently no two leathers are the same as it depends on the layers and shapes of the leather and some will have lighter areas or darker on the skin - a natural patterning - see this drums patterns and shadings - all natural! The Reindeer hide is hand processed, dyed and decorated and no two drums are ever the same. For Baby and Junior size drums, the drum hammer is made from Reindeer antler and a Reindeer bone die comes with the drum. It is recommended for larger size drums that the drum hammer is covered with leather padding and so the shape of the hammer changes. DRUM CARE Full drum care instructions will be provided. These are supplied because Reindeer hide is a unique living material that reacts to humidity, dryness and changes in temperature throughout its lifetime with you. In order to assure the drum works well in all conditions, it should be very well taken care of. If kept as decoration in normal conditions, there is not so much need for any particular treatment, but if the drum is to be played, there are a few practical considerations. The drum will reward the owner if it is well taken care of. The drum is an instrument like any other, but it is best used as background rhythm for tales, groups, and for creating atmosphere. Only a consecrated drum has a magickal link to your powers.
